I love to buy my Ginger (dachsund) a stuffed toy so that we can play catch and tug. But she can destroy a medium sized one in 2 days. I understand that dachsunds are bred to dig for underground animals, but she grabs the toy by the neck and shakes her head so violently, I think the toy itself is dying.
She doesn't like plastic ones, the snotty brat, so that's out of the question.|||I have a beagle and a mini dachshund. In our house the life span of a toy varies greatly. Sometimes they only last a few hours! Some of the toys have been there over a year. Just let your Ginger have fun. Look for toys in the clearance section at the pet store.|||My suggestion is to go to yard sales or thrift store and pay .25 cents to .50 cents for a toy if your dog doesn't take care of them. They have some interesting toys that rattle and make noise that are plush.
My terrier carries her plush everywhere but doesn't tear it up.|||I would think that as soon as it's losing small pieces it should be thrown out. You wouldn't want her to swallow pieces of material and get sick.|||Knotted ropes no fun for your pup, either? And, hopefully, your wiener dog has it's toys intact for as long as it's allowed to play with them, as the stuffing can choke pets and kids.|||I have 3 miniature Dachshunds and 2 German Shepherds, all but one of my dogs destroy those toys in a matter of MINUTES, plush toys do not last in my house so if your dog has them for two days your dog is getting more out of the plush toys than mine do. I do not waste my money on plush toys. I get ropes, hard rubber and squeeky toys because these last longer. I also use as toys, old rubber hoses, knotted socks and empty two liter bottles with cap and paper removed, my dogs love these things, especially the empty two liter bottle.|||Dogs destroy soft toys very quickly! A good idea is to give her old socks, old slippers (its a cliche but dogs love slippers!), old shoes, big plastic bottles or anything else you can think of. It will save on buying her new toys every week.
Good luck!|||I think it depends on the breed. My German Shorthaired Pointer will have toys disembowled in 2 minutes flat. The only toys he is allowed are Kongs and toys of that consistancy, he even chewed the top off a black Kong. And make sure that any pieces are disposed of in a hurry, your dog will get VERY sick if she eats them. (Ask me how I know!)
Linda|||dont worry my dog shakes stuffed animals to|||Our Chihuahua never destroys a toy. The Rat Terrier we're fostering will destroy it in one sitting and pull all the stuffing out!
My parents' dog will destroy one in a week or two. So, it all depends on the dog.
Your dog does "kill" the toy. That's part of the fun for him/her. That's totally normal for a dog.
I agree that going to a garage sale is a great way to buy plush toys for your dog without breaking the bank when you have one that destroys them so quickly! Brilliant! :)
However, try NOT to get toys with beanie/sand stuff in them...it can be hazardous to the dog if he rips it open and swallows any. ....just get ones with only fluff inside. And take off the plastic eyes/noses because they can choke on/swallow these parts, too. You should also remove any toy from his reach once he's torn it open as the fluff can accumulate in his GI tract as well and cause an obstruction...especially over time.
Here's some info from an article (linked below):
"Bear in mind that when providing a toy that was not made for a dog but for a child, check the label and make sure it doesn't say not for children under 3. This is usually a warning that the stuffing or insides of the toy cannot be digested and may contain harmful substances."|||Well, you know what she likes.
Some dogs can destroy plush toys really fast.
You might want to see if she'd like an old leather shoe to chew.
or ... a plush with a firmer fabric cover... or a leather cover...
try a rubber kong toy... there's one that's a dog bone shape.
They are rubber, not plastic and Kong toys are more durable than most.
Good luck... you have a challenge there.
