I have a Malti-poo shih-zhu,and he often gets sick AND whines non-stop in the car.
Soon i am goin on about a 1 hour drive, and a 2 hour Ferry ride. I was planning on bringin along my pup but i worry that he will just get sick and whine the whole time.
I have heard of giving toy dogs 1/2 of a Childrens Gravol.
Is this safe?
Does it help?|||Here in the U.S. we use Dramamine which is the same thing. The suggested dosage for dogs is 2 - 4 mg. per pound. The effects can last up to 8 hours as a mild sedation effective for nausea and vomiting. Weigh the dog, locate how many mg. are in each pill and cut the pills to achieve the lowest dosage of 2 mg. per pound.
Here's a link, scroll to the bottom for the Veterinary Use section - For some reason it won't let me post the link - go to www.wikipedia.com and put in Gravol for the link I am trying to post|||Try taking away all food about 12 hours before the trip (don't panic they can go over 24 hours without food safely, it's proper protocol for surgeries anyway) and you can give 1mg. per pound (of puppy) of Children's Benadryl. Talk with your veterinarian first just to make sure the Benadryl will be ok. He also might be abel to recommend some ACE (a mild sedative)|||I would be going to the vet to get the proper dosage, with such a small dog, it only takes a little to overdose them, and you have to remember that our metabolism is different to a dogs, so any childrens over the counter meds will be stronger than a child of the same weight will need.|||Before you give your dog anything you need to ask your vet! If you give the wrong dose for your dogs weight/age it can be lethal. You may have heard of people doing this before, but stay on the safe side and ask your vet first. You wouldnt want to do something wrong and hurt your pup.|||Please don't give him kids' medication without speaking to your vet. You could make him ill. The vet may be able to offer a mild sedative that is more appropriate for your pet.|||Why not ask your vet? I heard that they can give you med to put your dog to sleep for some time while on a car trip.|||Check with your vet for correct medication and dosage.
Good luck!|||you should ask your vet
GOOD LUCK!!|||NEVER give a dog, especially a small puppy, human medication. It is not made for dogs and can result in serious defects. Dogs aren't supposed to even have chocolate due to the fact that an ingredient in it is like a toxin, shutting down one of their organs and often resulting in death. Some people who said that this is "OK" to give your dog human medication may have large dogs which are able to handle more things with their stomachs, small dogs cannot dog this.
Rather than risking you're dog's life, try and take a different route. I recommend getting a crate and placing it in the trunk, or if that is too far away, in the back seat. Then, if the puppy does get sick, it will be in it's crate, not the car or on you. (just make sure to bring items to clean up the mess and extra towels as bedding.) To try and stop the whining, make sure you have many toys on hand, and every 30 minutes, or when needed, alternate them in / out. This should keep the puppy busy. Also, make sure to give only one or none at all of edible toys, because this may just cause the puppy to become more sick.
If you do not wish to keep you're puppy in a crate, my final option, which i have never tried, is to get a card board box which is large enough to fit you're puppy, but can also fit on the seat of you're passenger seat, or at the floor of the passenger seat. Cut the top off the box and follow the same instructions with the crate... with the towels and toys. This way, the puppy can still see you, is safe, has toys to keep him busy, and if it gets sick, can easily be cleaned up.
Try these ideas and drive around your town first to test it out. Just make sure the card board box is tall enough that the puppy cannot jump out or stick its head out over the side and get sick. Also, you may want to place a tarp under the crate or box to prevent any leaks or anything coming out of the crate and onto your car. Please follow one of these options and do NOT drug you're dog. What fun will it be if your new puppy is half asleep the whole time? hope this helps.
