I have a toy fox terrier puppy and I would like to fence in my yard. My questions are:
How tall does the fence have to be to prevent this breed from being able to jump over?
Can they climb chain link?
What are the best ways to avoid digging under?
I would like solutions other than invisible fences and things like that. Whatever you can give me that is helpful, I appreciate.|||You have come to the right place with this question!!! As a breeder of Toy Fox Terriers, I can attest to the fact that they can be quite industrious when it comes to 4 things: 1. digging, 2. climbing 3. chewing 4. getting into trouble!! Because I have so many TFTs (they plan their attacks better in groups) I have a well prepared prevention plan againt all of these problems, but I will only try to advise you on numbers 1 %26amp; 2...For my purposes, I have installed a 6' fence in my backyard which leads to their kennel area.price wise, it cost just as much to install a 6 footer as it did to install a 4 footer, so I figured, why not! (4 or 5 foot would do it, however) THE TRICK IS, to have the installers DIG A 1/2 TO A 1 FOOT TRENCH below the ground , all around where the fence is going to be placed %26amp; then replace the dirt back up over the bottom after the fencing %26amp; posts are in!! I anticipated ahead of time, that my guys would dig under the fence %26amp; before it was installed, I made sure the trenching part was in the written contract! As for climbing...it's just too high %26amp; they don't even try! I do not advise an invisible fence, not for these guys, anyway; it can be just as expensive as chain link, maybe more, %26amp; not as effective ( I couldn't sleep at night with one of these in place but...) Forget about a wooden or cedar fence...they're chewers, remember!! Also, some of the wood is treated with certain poisons to protect the wood, but would be lethal to a dog... Please don't underestimate this breed %26amp; what they can be capable of...you must use your best judgment when deciding about their safety %26amp; security...good luck %26amp; enjoy your lovely TFT!|||Ok buy a BIG fence! Why becuse I know a person with the same breed. They bought a medal bar fence. And they made it long.
GOOD LUCK!|||Have you considered invisible, electric fencing? No worries about jumping over or digging under.
I had a boxer who climbed up and over chain link fence, dug under it, or when all else failed, just jumped all the way over it (it was over 5 feet high).
Silly me, sorry, didn't see that you didn't want that suggestion! But still, I would highly recommend it anyway, it works great for smaller dogs.|||A standard chin link fence of 4 feet in height should do quite well, plus a 3 foot fence won't increase the value as much as a 4 footer. And a 4 footer will keep bigger dogs out.
Terriers' are notorious for both climbing and digging. Putting a concrete footer under the perimeter of the fence will prevent digging out, and if climbing up is a problem later on, you can add a electric fence halfway up on your side of the fence.
Hopefully your dog won't learn to fly! lol
They are amazingly active dogs and need a lot of attention.|||We have chihuahuas and always had problems with them climbing fences or digging out from under them. We finally installed a wooden privacy fence 6' high and the dogs have not escaped yet. We put the fence up about 3 yr ago. It is more expensive but wqrth it.|||If you want to shell out a huge amount of money get a privacy fence and have it sit down near the ground and they can also put a cement barrier under it to prevent digging. Chain link is good too but unfortunately if they want to dig they can get under it, but they do make these little stakes that you can stake it to the ground in the slightly higher areas also cement can be used under chain link. Call your local chain link fence dealer for your options... For terriers I would go decently high maybe 4' or more...|||Why not look into a vinyl fence that can be put right on or even into the ground. When dogs climb they grab onto the wire, and with TFT you don't have to go to 6' so it may not be that expensive. Vinyl doesn't have anything for them to grab and climb so 4' in vinyl may be fine and it won't rot out near or in the ground. I know they say treated lumber won't either but they have been changing treated lumber and I'm not so sure any longer if it won't rot. I put a link in for some pictures but shop around if you like the idea of vinyl
